"Terraced hill" together with "clawless scorpion with twisted tail" giving idea of convoluted and not clear but also twisting/undulating. Originally referred to a hidden recess or hollow in a terraced or undulating hillside but then came to mean nook and by association corner (looking in - not looking at, which would be kado, kaku etc).
